Our diesel tank cleaning best practices
- We perform tank cleaning on our diesel tanks annually. The reason for this is that it’s essential to prevent oxidation and microbial contamination of diesel fuel. Today, diesel engines run more efficiently on diesel fuel with very low sulphur content – 50 parts per million (ppm). The low sulphur diesel (USLD) is much more susceptible to microbial growth and the formation of sludge, which is detrimental to diesel engines.
- Tank cleaning best practice involves filtering the diesel fuel, use a biocide to kill the microbes and clean the sludge and dead organic matter out of the tank.
- If diesel tanks aren’t maintained properly, water may build up in the storage tank. Water plays a number of roles in the destruction of stored fuel quality. The accumulated water builds up on the outside of the diesel storage tanks. Day to night temperature changes cause condensation to develop on the inside of the storage tanks, which enhances the likelihood of microbial growth. Furthermore, bacteria, fungi and microbes only need a small layer of free water in the diesel fuel tank to grow and thrive inside of a fuel storage tank. Our tank cleaning process also entails an anti-acid additive which helps prevent corrosion. We monitor diesel tanks closely to avoid the accumulation of water.
- Water accumulation in diesel tanks can also cause a chemical breakdown of diesel fuel. Microbes that infest diesel tanks can produce corrosive substances and other biological by-products which accelerate the breakdown of the quality of diesel fuel. They also cause corrosion to diesel tanks themselves.
The bottom line is that if best tank cleaning practices aren’t followed, destruction of stored fuel quality will take place.
